Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

This is an agreement that talks about respecting the basic rights and freedoms of all humans without discriminating against anyone. This agreement is more specific to those rights for people with disabilities. It mentions what responsibilities the government has toward people with disabilities and what rules they need to follow to make sure that their rights are respected and that there is no discrimination and that people with disabilities have the same respect and chances as everyone else.

Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment

This is an agreement that talks about eliminating torture and other bad treatments of human beings by governments around the world. This includes not only physical torture but also mental or psychological torture. It forces governments to stop, prevent, investigate and punish anyone who participates in torture of any kind. This agreement is based on other human rights agreements like the Universal Declaration and the Covenant on Civil and Political rights and the UN Charter that talk about the basic rights of people, their right to equality, freedom, justice and peace in the world.

Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women

This Convention is an agreement that explains the rights of women. It is based on the basic rights and freedoms and works for equality between men and women.

Discrimination means to separate women from men and to take away certain rights only because they are women. Governments and countries need to put a stop to any and all discrimination against women. This means taking actions such as making laws to stop everyone from doing this and to protect the women.

The convention calls on Governments or Countries to:

International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights

This Covenant is an agreement that is a part of the International Bill of Rights.

This agreement talks about the right:

·         To decide who you want to be

·         To not be stopped in using your rights

·         To life

·         To be free from torture or cruel treatment

·         To be free from slavery or forced work

·         To be secure

·         To liberty

·         Of movement

·         To equality before the law

·         To privacy and protection from abuse

Convention on the Rights of the Child

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is a document about the basic rights that children have around the world. It talks about the basic needs of children that need to be met to allow them to be safe and grow up healthy. Children have the same basic rights as everyone else, but they do have more rights that are specific to them in their family and the role they take in their community. It explains the services that governments have to provide to children to protect them and meet their needs.

Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

This Declaration talks about the basic rights that every person has, but with more specific rights included for Indigenous people all over the world.

This Declaration was made because of the trouble Indigenous people all over the world have gone through in the past and are still going through. It is meant to reinforce Indigenous rights, strengthen the relationship between the government and the people and to recognise the duty that comes with this relationship.

Procedure under the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment

This Procedure is a guide that tells you what you need to do if you wanted to make a complaint about a country that has broken an agreement about human rights. If you are making a complaint in place of someone else, you will need to get permission from that person in writing, to have proof. This will need to be sent to the Human Rights Committee.
