This includes not only physical torture but also mental or psychological torture. It forces governments to stop, prevent, investigate and punish anyone who participates in torture of any kind. This agreement is based on other human rights agreements like the Universal Declaration and the Covenant on Civil and Political rights and the UN Charter that talk about the basic rights of people, their right to equality, freedom, justice and peace in the world.

This Convention is an agreement that explains the rights of women. It is based on the basic rights and freedoms and works for equality between men and women.

Discrimination means to separate women from men and to take away certain rights only because they are women. Governments and countries need to put a stop to any and all discrimination against women. This means taking actions such as making laws to stop everyone from doing this and to protect the women.
